A 4-year-old Amityville, N.Y., boy who was found unconscious and alone in an apartment has died, the apparent victim of violence, according to police.

Amityville police received a 911 call just before 4 p.m. Wednesday from an unidentified caller who said an ambulance was needed for a small boy at an apartment complex on 89 Ketcham Ave., according to a Suffolk County police statement.

When police reached the apartment, they found the boy unconscious on a couch in the living room. Police said no adults were present in the apartment.

"There were signs the little boy had suffered violence," Suffolk County Police Lt. Jack Fitzpatrick told the Associated Press.

The boy was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center where doctors pronounced him dead just before 6 p.m.

Suffolk County police are scheduling a press conference for later this afternoon to discuss the results of an autopsy on the boy, whose name has not been revealed by police.
