Body Camera Shows Police Saving Woman and Her Cat from House Fire

— -- South Dakota first responders rescued a woman and her cat from a burning home and it was all caught on a cop's body camera.

Deputy Michael Gengler was wearing the camera when he along with firefighters and medics were called to a raging house fire on April 24, an official said.

The 78-year-old homeowner was trapped inside by smoke and flames and all the home’s doors were either locked or blocked by her belongings, Pete Bolzer from the Brookings Fire Department told ABC News today.

First responders spotted the woman’s hand in a window and got to work on pulling her out while her cat 'meowed' in the background.

The dramatic body camera footage shows Gengler smashing the glass and then helping pull out the unconscious woman alongside Sgt. Jon Pike and a firefighter. Gengler then reached back in and rescued the the black tabby.

“We'll save your life and your pet, but I think the footage speaks for itself. You can really see the exact stress the deputy was under and how much his adrenaline was going," Bolzer said.

"The woman was just a minute or two away from dying," he added.

She was transported to Brookings Hospital and treated for smoke inhalation.

Gengler and Pike were awarded with the Medal of Merit Award on June 16 for their role in rescuing the woman and her cat.

The Brookings County Sheriff’s Office did not immediately respond to ABC News’ request for additional comment.
