SWAT Team Hunts Quarry Shooting Suspect

Oct. 5, 2011 — -- Cops with guns drawn went door to door in search of a gunman who opened fire at work earlier today, killing three co-workers and wounding at least six, including a woman during an attempted carjacking, according to ABC's San Francisco affiliate KGO-TV.

The suspect, Shareef Allman, 45, was attending a safety meeting at the limestone quarry in Cupertino, Calif., where he worked around 4:30 a.m. He appeared to become disgruntled and left the premises, according to Santa Clara County Sheriff's Lt. Rick Sung. He then returned with a handgun and rifle and started shooting at the approximately 50 people who were present.

Allman reportedly fled in the direction of the nearby Hewlett-Packard campus where a man matching his description shot a woman in the leg while attempting to carjack her vehicle, according to KGO-TV.

The suspect ran off withhout the car, police said, and officers and SWAT team members are combing the area looking for him with their guns drawn.

KGO reports that police have evacuated a Sunnyvale neighborhood near Homestead and Wolfe roads as they search for Allman. Schools in the area are either on lockdown or closed as SWAT teams continue the search.

Police said they recovered four guns from different areas, but believe he is still armed.

Colleagues at the Hanson Permanente quarry in Cupertino described Allman as a disgrunteld employee.

Most of the wounded are in critical condition. Santa Clara County sheriff's officials have told KGO-TV that three people died and six are seriously injured.

Three of the wounded were taken to Santa Clara Valley Medical Center for treatment and are reportedly in good and fair condition. Another victim was taken to Stanford University Medical Center in Palo Alto. The hospital has not released any information about the patient's condition. Police have the road that leads up to the quarry blocked off and a swarm of police cars and ambulances are at the site. Schools were on lockdown or closed in Cupertino as SWAT teams searched for Allman.

Allman was a truck operator at the Permanente Quarry and also produced and hosted a public access television show.
