The officer tackled the man as he tried to jump over a concrete barrier.
— -- A New Jersey police officer saved a man apparently attempting to commit suicide by grabbing him as he attempted to jump off a bridge Monday morning, police said.
The officer, Sgt. Greg Bogert, responded to a 911 call of a man walking in and out of traffic on northbound Route 287 by exit 53 around 11:30 a.m., according to the Riverdale Police Department.
Once he got there, Bogert tried to calm the man, who was visibly upset and crying, police said. Seconds later, dashboard camera video shows Bogert chasing after the man as he runs to the concrete barrier in an apparent attempt to jump off the bridge.
"Don't [expletive] do it," Bogert yelled as he sprinted after the man.
With the man's upper body halfway across the barrier, Bogert managed to grab him and pull him to safety.
"What's going on?" Bogert can be heard asking the man as he cries.
The man was taken to a nearby hospital for evaluation, police said.
