2 Cops Shot, One Fatally, After Serious Car Crash in Salt Lake City Area
The killed officer, Doug Barney, was an 18-year police veteran.
— -- An 18-year veteran police officer is dead and another officer is injured after a shooting followed a serious car crash in the Salt Lake City area this morning, officials said.
A suspect is also dead, officials said.
When officers responded to what appeared to be a very serious car accident, a man and a woman, who were in one of the damaged cars, fled on foot, Salt Lake County Sheriff Jim Winder said today.
Moments later, Officer Doug Barney encountered the suspect, who fired multiple rounds at Barney, striking him in the head, Winder said. Barney died from his injuries at Intermountain Medical Center, Winder said.
Less than three minutes later, when officers encountered a man walking near the car accident and shooting, another officer was shot multiple times. That officer survived and his condition is improving, Winder said.
"As soon as officers came into contact with this individual, gunfire erupted, multiple rounds were exchanged both from the suspect and from our officers," Winder said. "An additional officer, Officer John Ritchie, was struck at least three times and the suspect ... was also hit."
The suspect, Cory Lee Henderson, was killed during the incident, Winder said. Henderson was wanted both locally by the Metro Gang Unit and federally, Winder said.
The woman allegedly with him is being sought as a person of interest, Winder said.
