5 Cyclists Killed in Kalamazoo Crash Identified

— -- The five people killed in Kalamazoo, Michigan after a pickup truck hit a group of cyclists Tuesday night have been identified by police.

The victims, all of Michigan, are Debra Ann Bradley, 53, of Augusta, Melissa Ann Fevig-Hughes, 42, of Augusta, Fred Anton Nelson, 73, of Kalamazoo, Lorenz (Larry) John Paulik, 74, of Kalamazoo and Suzanne Joan Sippel, 56, of Augusta, were killed, said Paul Matyas, Undersheriff of the Kalamazoo County Sheriff's Office.

Sippel was employed with Michigan State University's W.K. Kellogg Biological Station, which posted a statement Wednesday saying it was "deeply saddened" by the news of her death.

"Suzanne was a valued member of the KBS community," MSU said. "Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of Suzanne during this very difficult time and our focus is on providing caring support to them."

Four more cyclists were injured by the truck and were transported to the hospital.

As of Wednesday morning, two were in serious conditions, the Bronson Medical Hospital said in a statement. One victim remained in critical condition and another in fair condition, the Borgess Medical Center said.

The nine cyclists were struck from behind by a blue Chevy pickup as they were traveling north on the shoulder of a road in Cooper Township, Kalamazoo County Prosecuting Attorney Jeffrey Getting said.

Police found the 50-year-old driver a short distance away. He is in police custody, but his name will not be released until charges are filed, authorities said.

"We are really struggling with the loss," Mark Irwin, of the Kalamazoo Bicycle Club, told ABC News today, adding that they are relying on the media for information because they do not even know the victims' names yet.

The cyclists were not on one of their regularly scheduled rides when they were struck, Irwin said.
