Dog Lost at Sea for Weeks Reunited With Owner

— -- Luna the year-old German shepherd, presumed "lost at sea" after vanishing last month from her owner's fishing boat, has been reunited with him.

Nick Hayworth was out fishing with Luna Feb. 10, just off the coast of San Diego, California, when he noticed she had disappeared.

"It was really devastating to go from having this dog next to me every minute of my life to all of sudden, she's gone in a flash," Hayworth told ABC News

The distraught owner combed the Pacific Ocean for days, with even the U.S. Navy joining the search on land, air and sea. Hayworth eventually gave up hope and posted on Facebook, "RIP Luna, you will be missed."

"I was heartbroken. I presumed she was dead," he said.

But Luna had other ideas. She swam nearly 2 miles to San Clemente Island, which is owned and operated by the Navy, and survived by eating rats and dead fish. She was found by military personnel, chilling on a roadside.

The German shepherd has since been examined by a wildlife biologist at the San Diego Zoo, who determined Luna was "perfectly healthy other than being a little undernourished," according to Sandy DeMunnik, public affairs officer for the Naval Base Coronado.

As for Hayworth, "Probably the happiest I've ever been in my life to have my best friend back."
