The baby's grandmother was inside a gas station when the alleged thief struck.
— -- Police in New Jersey are searching for a suspect seen in a gas station’s surveillance video stealing a car with a 1-year-old baby inside.
The alleged car theft occurred around 6 p.m. on Sunday when the baby’s grandmother, who asked that her name not be revealed, pulled up to a gas station in Hamilton Township.
When the grandmother entered the gas station, leaving her granddaughter and car keys in the car, the suspect made his move.
The suspected thief can be seen in the surveillance video walking up to the gas station and eyeing the car before jumping in and driving off.
"There was no way he didn't see her and hear me screaming at him, 'The baby! My baby is in the car,’” the grandmother told local ABC station WPVI. “All I could think was, 'Please Lord help her.’”
Police used the signal from the grandmother’s cell phone to track down the car, finding it 30 minutes later, abandoned with the baby safely inside.
WPVI reports the suspect is described as an approximately 5’8” tall white male in his 40s with a thin build. He was last seen wearing a white t-shirt with jean shorts and a blue or black baseball cap.
Police have not said whether they will file charges against the grandmother for leaving the child in the car.The grandmother told WPVI she regrets her decision.
“I don't care how much of a split second you're going to be in a store, take the baby out,” she said. "I don't care if they want the car, take the baby out of the car."
