Mourners Line the Streets for Slain Fox Lake Cop's Funeral
Officers lined up to hug Gliniewicz's wife during the visitation.
— -- Hundreds of police officers from across the country attended a funeral today for a suburban Chicago lieutenant who was shot and killed last week.
Fox Lake police Lt. Charles Joseph Gliniewicz was shot dead Tuesday shortly after he radioed that he was chasing three men. Gliniewicz was 52 and nearing retirement after more than 30 years with the police department.
During funeral services at a high school auditorium in Antioch, his hometown near Fox Lake, Gliniewicz's wife, Mel, wore a police badge on a necklace and greeted mourners, many of whom hugged her and their four sons.
Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner and his wife were among those in attendance at the funeral services.
The more than mile-long funeral procession wound through Fox Lake and nearby forests where authorities were searching for the still at-large suspects.
Bagpipers performed at the beginning of the 18-mile procession to Fox Lake and back to Antioch, where Gliniewicz was to be buried.
The Lake County Sheriff’s Office, which is investigating the shooting, announced a 1:30 p.m. news conference Tuesday, but no further details were released.
