Oregon School Shooter Was 15 and Heavily Armed

June 11, 2014— -- The teenager who shot a fellow student in an Oregon school was identified today as Jared Michael Padgett, accused of coming to the school with a rifle, a handgun and nine loaded magazines capable of holding several hundred rounds of ammunition.

The freshman killed Emilio Hoffman, 14, in the school locker room of Reynolds High School in Troutdale and exchanged gunfire in the hallway with police before killing himself, authorities said.

The motive for Padgett's outburst remains a mystery, police said.

"We have not established any link between the shooter and the victim," Police Chief Scott Anderson said. He added, "At this time it would be inappropriate to discuss a possible motive" for the shooting.

Padgett came to school with a daunting array of weaponry in a guitar case and a duffel bag. Anderson said he fired an AR-15 rifle, but also had a semi-automatic handgun, a knife, and nine loaded magazines capable of holding "several hundred rounds."

Padgett was wearing a vest designed to hold ammunition and a multi-sport helmet with camouflage.

Because Padgett carried so much ammunition, the "early notification was critical" to saving lives, the police chief said.

The shooting began when Padgett shot Hoffman in the locker room, Anderson said. Physical education teacher Todd Rispler fled the locker room, but was grazed in the hip by a bullet, police said.

Despite his wound, Rispler quickly alerted the school to the danger and a lockdown was imposed and police were called.

Padgett encountered police in the school hallway and exchanged gunfire with an officer.

He was later found in a bathroom stall, where a police robot determined that he was dead. Police said today that Padgett shot himself.
