Pennsylvania Stabbing Victim Still Plans on Dancing at the Prom

April 10, 2014— -- One victim of Wednesday's school stabbing attack said the suspect came charging up a hallway stabbing people at random and plunged a knife into his back.

Despite the deep wound and the trauma, Brett Hurt said he intends to go the prom next month.

"He says he plans on dancing," his mother Amanda said.

Hurt described the attack during a press conference this morning from Forbes Regional Hospital in Monroeville, Pa., on the outskirts of Pittsburgh.

Stabbing Suspect Called "Misunderstood"

Hurt was one of 22 people who were injured in the attack Wednesday morning at Franklin Regional High School, about 30 minutes outside of Pittsburgh. Doctors are Forbes said today three patients are still in the ICU, including two on ventilators. Doctors said that many students suffered severe injuries to internal organs. All are expected to survive.

Alex Hribal, 16, is charged with the stabbing spree.

"I didn’t even know it was going on at the time. I was just walking down hall and he stabbed me with a knife," Hurt said today. "Everything went...I didn’t even know it was going on. I couldn’t move."

"It happened from behind. He was running up the hallway and hit me on the way," Hurt said.

Hurt said that he had been goofing off with friend Gracie Evans when the attack started, and had just pushed her playfully when he got stabbed, saying that otherwise she would have been stabbed. After he was injured, Evans pulled Hurt into a classroom and put pressure on his wounds, he said.

"What was going on in my mind? Will I survive or will I die?" Hurt recalled. "Gracie Evans saved my life."

Hurt's mother, Amanda, tearfully said, "I’ve already hugged her and kissed her and told I love her."

Police said that Hribal used two kitchen knives, 8 or 10 inches in length, as he went on the attack, injuring students and a security guard before he was tackled by Assistant Principal Sam King and handcuffed by the school resource officer.

He told school officials when he was apprehended that he wanted to die.

Hurt said he had met Hribal a couple of times but did not know him well. "I don’t’ know his reputation, but after today he’s going to have a bad one," Hurt said.

Hribal has been charged with four counts of attempted murder and 21 counts of aggravated assault and is being charged as an adult.

Hurt, who said he hopes to be released either today or this weekend, described a chaotic scene as the attack began around 7 a.m. Wednesday.

"There were so many people in the hallways and then someone said there was blood and everyone started screaming and running in different directions and people asked if I was all right," he said.
