— -- A Las Vegas police officer sitting in a car stopped at a red light was shot today by a man who walked up and opened fire on the car with a handgun, police said.

The officer was hit in the hand and hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries, the Las Vegas Police Department said.

The incident occurred as police who were dispatched to a disturbance call at a 99-cent store were returning to their patrol, according to a police statement.

While the officers were sitting at a red light waiting to make a left turn, a suspect approached them carrying a semi-automatic handgun and started firing.

Police got out of their cars and chased the suspect on foot, eventually catching him in a nearby 7-11 parking lot, according to the police statement.

The suspect was arrested and the gun believed to be used in the shooting was recovered, police said.

An intersection near the shooting was closed while the incident was investigated.
