3 Rescued After Navy Chopper Crashes Into Virginia River

— -- Three people have been rescued after a Navy helicopter crashed into a Virginia river this morning.

According to the U.S. Navy, am MH-60S helicopter crashed in the James River while on "a routine training mission" with three crew members on board.

Newport News Police confirmed to ABC News that a fishing boat assisted the crew members out of the water and onto the boat. The Navy crew members were then transferred to a Newport News Marine Police boat.

Rescued by that "Good Samaritan vessel," the three crew members are facing what are believed to be "non-life-threatening injuries" after being transported to Naval Medical Center Portsmouth in Portsmouth, Virginia.

The U.S. Coast Guard confirmed to ABC News it received a call about the chopper crash at 11:14 a.m. and has since arrived on scene, establishing a 500-yard safety zone in the vicinity of the crash, which happened near the James River Bridge. According to the Coast Guard, no commercial traffic has been affected.

The helicopter was assigned to Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron Two (HSC-2), the helicopter Fleet Replacement Squadron based at Norfolk Naval Station Chambers Field, according to the U.S. Navy.

"A mishap investigation board will be convened to determine the cause," the Navy said in a statement.
