U.S. Military Deaths in War With Iraq From June to August 2003

— -- The following are the U.S. personnel who have been killed in Operation Iraqi Freedom from June to August 2003. All dates reflect when the incidents occurred local time. For lists of deaths at other times, see the links at the left of the page. The lists are compiled from information reported by the Defense Department after notification of family.

Spc. Chad C. Fuller, 24, of Potsdam, N.Y. was killed while on patrol when his squad was attacked. He died of injuries sustained during the attack. The incident is under investigation.

Pfc. Adam L. Thomas, 21, of Palos Hills, Ill. was killed while on patrol when his squad was attacked. He died of injuries sustained during the attack. The incident is under investigation.

Sgt. Sean K. Cataudella, 28, of Tucson, Ariz., died in Ba'qubah, Iraq after the military vehicle he was driving hit an embankment and rolled into a canal.

Staff Sgt. Mark A. Lawton, 41, of Hayden, Colo., was killed north of As Suaydat, Iraq. Lawton was in a convoy that was hit by a rocket-propelled grenade.

Spc. Rafael L. Navea, 34, of Pittsburgh, Pa., was killed in Fallujah, Iraq. Navea was in a vehicle that struck an improvised explosive device. Navea died of his injuries.

Sgt. Gregory A. Belanger, 24, of Narragansett, R.I., was killed in Al Hallia, Iraq. Belanger was in a vehicle that struck an improvised explosive device. Belanger died of his injuries.

Lt. Col. Anthony L. Sherman, 43, of Pottstown, Pa., died in Camp Arifjan, Kuwait. Sherman died as a result of non-combat related injury.

Pfc. Pablo Manzano, 19, B Company, 54th Engineer Battalion, V Corps, Bamberg, Germany, of Heber, Calif., died in Logistical Support Area Dogwood, Iraq. Manzano died as a result of a non-combat weapons discharge.

Spc. Stephen M. Scott, 21, of Lawton, Okla., died in Baghdad, Iraq. Scott died as a result of non-combat injuries.

Pfc. Vorn J. Mack, 19, of Orangeburg, S.C., died near the Hadithah Dam, west of Ar Ramadi, Iraq. Mack jumped into the Euphrates River to take a swim and did not resurface. A search party found Mack's body downstream on Aug. 24.

Pfc. Michael S. Adams, 20, of Spartanburg, S.C., died in Baghdad, Iraq. Adams was participating in a small arms fire exercise on the range when a bullet ricocheted and ignited a fire in the building. He died as a result of injuries sustained during the fire.

Lt. Kylan A. Jones-Huffman, 31, of Aptos, Calif., was killed in Al Hillah, Iraq, by an unidentified gunman. Jones-Huffman was on temporary duty with the I Marine Expeditionary Force.

Staff Sgt. Bobby C. Franklin, 38, of Mineral Bluff, Ga., was killed in Baghdad, Iraq. Franklin died of injuries sustained by an improvised explosive device.

Sgt. Kenneth W. Harris Jr., 23, of Charlotte, Tenn., was killed in Scania, Iraq. Harris was fatally injured in a two-vehicle accident while driving south on the main supply route. Another soldier was also injured in the incident.

Spc. Eric R. Hull, 23, of Uniontown, Pa., was killed in Baghdad, Iraq. Hull was in a military vehicle returning from the airport when his vehicle hit an improvised explosive device. Hull died of his injuries.

Pfc. David M. Kirchhoff, 31, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, died in Landstuhl, Germany. Pfc. Kirchhoff suffered a non-hostile injury on Aug. 8 and died on Aug. 14.

Sgt. Steven W. White, 29, of Lawton, Okla., was killed in Tikrit, Iraq. White died of injuries sustained when his M-113 armored personnel carrier hit an antitank mine.

Staff Sgt. Richard S. Eaton Jr., 37, of Guilford, Conn., died in Ar Ramadi, Iraq. A fellow soldier tried to wake Eaton and noticed he was not breathing.

Pfc. Daniel R. Parker, 18, of Lake Elsinore, Calif., died in Mosul, Iraq. Parker was thrown from his vehicle when the driver swerved to avoid an oncoming vehicle in another lane.

Pfc. Timmy R. Brown, Jr., 21, of Conway, Pa., was killed in Taji, Iraq. Brown was in a convoy when he was injured by an explosive device.

Sgt. Taft V. Williams, 29, of New Orleans, La., was killed on Aug. 12 near Ar Ramadi, Iraq. Williams was in a convoy when his vehicle hit an improvised explosive device.

Staff Sgt. David S. Perry, 36, of Bakersfield, Calif., was killed in Baquabah, Iraq. He was inspecting a suspicious package when it exploded and fatally injured him.

Sgt. Floyd G. Knighten, Jr., 55, of Olla, La., died as a result of a non-combat related cause while in a convoy from Camp Bilad heading to Camp Pennsylvania in Iraq.

Spc. Levi B. Kinchen, 21, of Tickfaw, La., died in Baghdad. A fellow soldier tried to wake Kinchen and noticed he was not breathing.

Pvt. Matthew D. Bush, 20, of East Alton, Ill., died in Camp Caldwell, Iraq. A fellow soldier tried to wake Bush and noticed he was not breathing.

Pfc. Brandon Ramsey, 21, of Calumet City, Ill., died in Tallil, Iraq, when the vehicle he was in rolled over during a chase of a suspicious vehicle and fatally injured him.

Pfc. Duane E. Longstreth, 19, of Tacoma, Wash., died in Baghdad as a result of non-combat related injuries.

Staff Sgt. Brian R. Hellerman, 35, of Freeport, Minn., was killed in Baghdad when an Iraqi vehicle opened fire on his unit.

Pvt. Kyle C. Gilbert, 20, of Brattleboro, Vt., was killed in Baghdad when Iraqi vehicle opened fire on his unit.

Sgt. Leonard D. Simmons, 33, of New Bern, N.C., died in Mosul, Iraq, of a non-combat related cause.

Spc. Zeferino E. Colunga, 20, of Bellville, Texas, died on Aug. 6 at Homburg University Hospital in Germany, after being evacuated to the 28th Combat Support Hospital in Iraq on Aug. 4.

Staff Sgt. David L. Loyd, 44, of Jackson, Tenn., died in a Kuwait hospital after experiencing severe chest pains.

Spc. Farao K. Letufuga, 20, of Pago Pago, American Samoa, died in Mosul, Iraq, after falling from the top of a building while he was performing guard duty.

Spc. Justin W. Hebert, 20, of Arlington, Wash., was killed in Kirkuk, Iraq. Hebert was on patrol when his vehicle was struck by a rocket-propelled grenade.

Pvt. Michael J. Deutsch, 21, of Dubuque, Iowa, was killed in Baghdad, Iraq. Deutsch was in a vehicle that was struck by an explosive device.

Spc. James I. Lambert III, 22, of Raleigh, N.C., was killed in Baghdad, Iraq. Lambert was struck by a stray bullet fired during what was believed to be a celebratory event by local nationals.

1st Lt. Leif E. Nott, 24, of Cheyenne, Wyo., was killed in Belaruz, Iraq. Nott died of wounds received from hostile fire.

Sgt. Nathaniel Hart Jr., 29, of Valdosta, Ga., died of injuries he received when his vehicle went off the road and rolled over in Tillil, Iraq.

Spc. William J. Maher III, 35, of Yardley, Pa., was killed on in Baghdad, Iraq. Maher was in a convoy when he was injured by an improvised explosive device. Maher died of his injuries.

Sgt. Nathaniel Hart Jr., 29, of Valdosta, Ga., died in Tillil, Iraq. Hart died of injuries he received when his vehicle went off the road and rolled over.

Sgt. Heath A. McMillin, 29, of Canandaigua, N.Y., was killed when a patrol he was in came under attack from rocket-propelled grenade and small arms fire south of Baghdad, Iraq.

Pfc. Jonathan M. Cheatham, 19, of Camden, Ark., was killed when a convoy he was in came under rocket-propelled grenade attack in Baghdad, Iraq.

Sgt. Daniel K. Methvin, 22, of Belton, Texas, was killed in Baghdad, Iraq, when a grenade was thrown from a window of an Iraqi civilian hospital that he was guarding.

Spc. Jonathan P. Barnes, 21, of Anderson, Mo., was killed in Baghdad, Iraq, when a grenade was thrown from a window of an Iraqi civilian hospital that he was guarding.

Pfc. Wilfredo Perez Jr., 24, of Norwalk, Conn., was killed in Baghdad, Iraq, when a grenade was thrown from a window of an Iraqi civilian hospital that he was guarding.

Cpl. Evan Asa Ashcraft, 24, of West Hills, Calif. Ashcraft was killed north of Al Hawd, Iraq, when the military convoy he was traveling in came under enemy fire.

Pfc. Raheen Tyson Heighter, 22, of Bay Shore, N.Y. Heighter was killed north of Al Hawd, Iraq, when the military convoy he was traveling in came under enemy fire.

Staff Sgt. Hector R. Perez, 40, of Corpus Christi, Texas. Perez was killed north of Al Hawd, Iraq, when the military convoy he was traveling in came under enemy fire.

Sgt. Juan M. Serrano, 31, of Manati, Puerto Rico, died in Baghdad, Iraq. He was changing a tire on an M998 vehicle when it fell on him, inflicting a fatal head injury.

Capt. Joshua T. Byers, 29, of Nevada was killed in action east of Baghdad, Iraq, when his convoy hit an explosive device.

Spc. Brett T. Christian, 27, of North Royalton, Ohio, was killed in Mosul, Iraq. Christian was in a convoy that came under attack by rocket-propelled grenades.

Spc. Jon P. Fettig, 30, of Dickinson, N.D., was killed on the outside of Ar Ramadi, Iraq. Fettig was killed when the Heavy Expanded-Mobility Tactical Truck he was in was hit by a rocket propelled grenade.

Cpl. Mark A. Bibby, 25, of Watha, N.C., died when an improvised explosive device exploded near his convoy that was on its way to a water treatment facility.

Air Force Master Sgt. David A. Scott, 51, of Union, Ohio, died as a result of a non-hostile cause in Doha, Qatar.

Sgt. 1st Class Christopher R. Willoughby, 29, of Phenix City, Ala., was killed when the vehicle he was riding in rolled over in Baghdad, Iraq.

Sgt. Justin W. Garvey, 23, of Townsend, Mass., was killed when his vehicle was ambushed and struck by rocket propelled grenades while he was on patrol in Tallifar, Iraq.

Sgt. Jason D. Jordan, 24 of Elba, Ala., died while patrolling a village when the vehicle was ambushed by rocket propelled grenades in Tallifar, Iraq.

2nd Lt. Jonathan D. Rozier, 25, of Katy, Texas, died when his unit was fired upon by rocket-propelled grenades and small arms fire while providing security at a municipal building in Baghdad, Iraq.

Spc. Joel L. Bertoldie, 20, of Independence, Mo., died when he was thrown from the military vehicle he was driving when an explosive device was detonated underneath at Fallujah, Iraq.

Petty Officer 3rd Class David J. Moreno, 26, of Gering, Neb., was killed in Al Hamishiyah, Iraq, from a non-hostile gunshot wound.

Sgt. Mason Douglas Whetstone, 30, a Utah native, died as a result of non-combat injuries in Baghdad, Iraq. The incident is under investigation.

Spc. Ramon Reyes Torres, 29, of Caguas, Puerto Rico, was killed in Baghdad, Iraq. Reyes Torres was killed as he sought cover from a passing truck that contained a command-detonated device.

Lance Cpl. Cory Ryan Geurin, 18, of Santee, Calif., was standing post on a palace roof in Babylon when he fell approximately 60 feet and died in Babylon, Iraq.

Sgt. Michael T. Crockett, 27, of Soperton, Ga., was killed while on patrol when he came under a rocket propelled grenade attack in Baghdad, Iraq.

Cpt. Paul J. Cassidy, 36, of Laingsburg, Mich., died as a result of non-combat injuries in Camp Babylon, Iraq.

Sgt. Jaror C. Puello-Coronado, 36, of Pocono Summit, Pa., died while manning a traffic point when the operator of a dump truck lost control of the vehicle at Camp Edson, Iraq. Puello-Coronado was struck by the truck and died of his injuries.

Spc. Joshua M. Neusche, 20, of Montreal, Mo., died from a non-combat cause in Homburg Hospital, Germany.

Spc. Christian C. Schulz, 20, of Colleyville, Texas, Schulz died as a result of non-combat injuries in Baqubah, Iraq. This incident is under investigation.

Sgt. 1st Class Dan H. Gabrielson, 39, of Spooner, Wis., died while traveling in a convoy that came under attack. He was killed by hostile fire in Ba Qubah, Iraq.

Sgt. Melissa Valles, 26, of Eagle Pass, Texas, died as a result of non-combat injuries in Balad, Iraq. The incident is under investigation.

Sgt. Roger D. Rowe, 54, of Bon Aqua, Tenn., was killed as a result of an enemy sniper attack in Iraq.

Lance Cpl. Jason Andrew Tetrault, 20, of Moreno Valley, Calif., was killed in a vehicle accident in Kuwait.

Sgt. 1st Class Craig A. Boling, 38, of Elkhart, Ind., died in Camp Wolf, Kuwait.

Pvt. Robert L. McKinley, 23, of Kokomo, Ind., died in Homberg, Germany.

Spc. Chad L. Keith, 21, of Batesville, Ind., was killed when was on patrol and his vehicle drove past an object that exploded on the side of the road in Baghdad, Iraq.

Staff Sgt. Barry Sanford, Sr., 46, of Aurora, Colo., died in Balad, Iraq.

Sgt. David B. Parson, 30, of Kannapolis, N.C., was killed while conducting a raid on a house when he was shot Baghdad, Iraq.

Spc. Jeffrey M. Wershow, 22, of Gainesville, Fla., was killed while conducting military operations when he was shot in Baghdad, Iraq.

Pfc. Edward J. Herrgott, 20, of Shakopee, Minn., died from a gunshot wound while on patrol in Baghdad, Iraq.

Pfc. Corey L. Small, 20, of East Berlin, Pa. died from a non-combat related cause in Iraq.

Cpl. Travis J. Bradachnall, 21, of Multnomah County, Ore. was killed in an explosion during a mine-clearing operation near the city of Karbala, Iraq.

1st Sgt. Christopher D. Coffin, 51, of Bethlehem, Pa, died when his vehicle ran into a ditch while he was trying to avoid a civilian vehicle on Highway 8 in Iraq.

Sgt. Timothy M. Conneway, 22, of Enterprise, Ala., died of wounds inflicted when the vehicle Conneway was traveling in was struck by an explosive device in Baghdad, Iraq.

Cpl. Tomas Sotelo Jr., 20, of Houston, Texas, was killed while traveling in a convoy when a rocket-propelled grenade struck his vehicle in Baghdad, Iraq.

Spc. Corey A. Hubbell, 20, of Urbana, Ill., died from a non-combat related cause in Camden Yards, Kuwait.

Hospitalman Joshua McIntosh, 22, of Kingman, Ariz., died in Karbala, Iraq, from a non-hostile gunshot wound.

Spc. Richard P. Orengo, 32, of Puerto Rico, was shot and died of injuries he received on June 26 in An Najif, Iraq.

Spc. Andrew F. Chris, 25, of California, was fatally wounded in combat operations in hostile enemy territory in Iraq.

Lance Cpl. Gregory E. MacDonald, 29, of Washington, D.C., died in Iraq when the light armored vehicle he was traveling in rolled over.

Sgt. 1st Class Gladimir Philippe, 37, of Linden, N.J. was listed as killed in action when he and a fellow soldier failed to respond to a radio check. The soldier's remains were located in Taji, Iraq.

Pfc. Kevin C. Ott, 27, of Columbus, Ohio was listed as killed in action when he and a fellow soldier failed to respond to a radio check. The soldier's remains were located in Taji, Iraq.

Spc. Cedric L. Lennon, 32, of West Blocton, Ala., died from a noncombat-related cause in Baghdad, Iraq.

Spc. Orenthial J. Smith, 21, of Allendale, S.C., died in Baghdad, Iraq, when a convoy he was in was ambushed by small-arms fire.

Spc. Paul T. Nakamura, 21, of Santa Fe Springs, Calif., died in Al Iskandariyah, Iraq. Nakamura was part of an ambulance crew transporting an injured soldier when the vehicle was hit by an RPG.

Pfc. Michael R. Deuel, 21, of Nemo, S.D., received fatal gunshot wounds while on guard duty at a propane distribution center in Baghdad, Iraq.

Staff Sgt. William T. Latham, 29, of Kingman, Ariz., died of wounds on June 18, at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C. He was participating in a raid at a suspected arms market in Ar Ramadi, Iraq, when he was hit with shrapnel.

Sgt. Michael L. Tosto, 24, of Apex, N.C., died from a noncombat-related cause at Camp Wolf, Kuwait.

Pvt. Robert L. Frantz, 19, of San Antonio, died of injuries sustained in a grenade attack while he was on guard duty in Baghdad, Iraq.

Pvt. Shawn D. Pahnke, 25, of Shelbyville, Ind., received a fatal gunshot wound while on patrol in Baghdad, Iraq.

Spc. Joseph D. Suell, 24, of Lufkin, Texas, died from a noncombat-related cause in Todjie, Iraq.

Pfc. Ryan Cox, 19, of Derby, Kan., died in Najaf, Iraq, of wounds suffered from what the Defense Department described as a "noncombat weapon discharge."

Andrew Pokorny, 30, of Naperville, Ill., died June 13 in Asad, Iraq, when his vehicle rolled over while he was returning from patrol.

Spc. John Klinesmith, 25, of Stockbridge, Ga., was found dead June 12 in a lake on a palace compound in Fallujah, Iraq. He had been last seen wading in the lake.

Pfc. Gavin Neighbor, 20, of Somerset, Ohio, died June 10 while off from guard duty in Baghdad, Iraq, after he was hit by a rocket-propelled grenade.

Sgt. Michael Dooley, 23, of Pulaski, Va., died June 8 at a traffic control post in Asad, Iraq, when the occupants of a car asked for help and then opened fire.

Pvt. Jesse Halling, 19, of Indianapolis, died June 7 at a military police station in Tikrit, Iraq, when he and other troops were hit by rifle-propelled grenades and small arms fire.

Petty Officer 3rd Class Doyle Bollinger, 21, of Poteau, Okla., died June 6 near Baghdad, Iraq, when an ordnance accidentally exploded in the area where he was working.

Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class David Sisung, 21, of Phoenix, Ariz., died June 6, 2003, while in the Persian Gulf. Sinsung died of a non-combat related injury.

Sgt. Travis Burkhardt, 26, of Edina, Mo., died June 6 in Baghdad, Iraq, when his vehicle rolled over during an escort mission.

Pfc. Branden Oberleitner, 20, of Worthington, Ohio, died June 5 in Fallujah, Iraq, while returning from patrol when his unit was fired on by a rocket-propelled grenade.

Sgt. Atanacio Haromarin, 27, of Baldwin Park, Calif., died June 3 near Balad, Iraq, while manning a checkpoint when his unit came under enemy fire.

Sgt. Jonathan W. Lambert, 28, of Newsite, Miss., died June 1 at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, Germany, as a result of injuries he suffered when his vehicle rolled over on May 26 in Iraq.
