U.S. Military Deaths in War With Iraq -- 2003

July 24, 2003

Cpl. Evan Asa Ashcraft, 24, of West Hills, Calif. Ashcraft was killed north of Al Hawd, Iraq, when the military convoy he was traveling in came under enemy fire.

Pfc. Raheen Tyson Heighter, 22, of Bay Shore, N.Y. Heighter was killed north of Al Hawd, Iraq, when the military convoy he was traveling in came under enemy fire.

Staff Sgt. Hector R. Perez, 40, of Corpus Christi, Texas. Perez was killed north of Al Hawd, Iraq, when the military convoy he was traveling in came under enemy fire.

Sgt. Juan M. Serrano, 31, of Manati, Puerto Rico, died in Baghdad, Iraq. He was changing a tire on an M998 vehicle when it fell on him, inflicting a fatal head injury.

July 23, 2003

Capt. Joshua T. Byers, 29, of Nevada was killed in action east of Baghdad, Iraq, when his convoy hit an explosive device.

Spc. Brett T. Christian, 27, of North Royalton, Ohio, was killed in Mosul, Iraq. Christian was in a convoy that came under attack by rocket-propelled grenades.

July 22, 2003

Spc. Jon P. Fettig, 30, of Dickinson, N.D., was killed on the outside of Ar Ramadi, Iraq. Fettig was killed when the Heavy Expanded-Mobility Tactical Truck he was in was hit by a rocket propelled grenade.

July 21, 2003

Cpl. Mark A. Bibby, 25, of Watha, N.C., died when an improvised explosive device exploded near his convoy that was on its way to a water treatment facility.

July 20, 2003

Air Force Master Sgt. David A. Scott, 51, of Union, Ohio, died as a result of a non-hostile cause in Doha, Qatar.

Sgt. 1st Class Christopher R. Willoughby, 29, of Phenix City, Ala., was killed when the vehicle he was riding in rolled over in Baghdad, Iraq.

Sgt. Justin W. Garvey, 23, of Townsend, Mass., was killed when his vehicle was ambushed and struck by rocket propelled grenades while he was on patrol in Tallifar, Iraq.

Sgt. Jason D. Jordan, 24 of Elba, Ala., died while patrolling a village when the vehicle was ambushed by rocket propelled grenades in Tallifar, Iraq.

July 19, 2003

2nd Lt. Jonathan D. Rozier, 25, of Katy, Texas, died when his unit was fired upon by rocket-propelled grenades and small arms fire while providing security at a municipal building in Baghdad, Iraq.

July 18, 2003

Spc. Joel L. Bertoldie, 20, of Independence, Mo., died when he was thrown from the military vehicle he was driving when an explosive device was detonated underneath at Fallujah, Iraq.

July 17, 2003

Petty Officer 3rd Class David J. Moreno, 26, of Gering, Neb., was killed in Al Hamishiyah, Iraq, from a non-hostile gunshot wound.

Sgt. Mason Douglas Whetstone, 30, a Utah native, died as a result of non-combat injuries in Baghdad, Iraq. The incident is under investigation.

July 16, 2003

Spc. Ramon Reyes Torres, 29, of Caguas, Puerto Rico, was killed in Baghdad, Iraq. Reyes Torres was killed as he sought cover from a passing truck that contained a command-detonated device.

July 15, 2003

Lance Cpl. Cory Ryan Geurin, 18, of Santee, Calif., was standing post on a palace roof in Babylon when he fell approximately 60 feet and died in Babylon, Iraq.

July 14, 2003

Sgt. Michael T. Crockett, 27, of Soperton, Ga., was killed while on patrol when he came under a rocket propelled grenade attack in Baghdad, Iraq.

July 13, 2003

Cpt. Paul J. Cassidy, 36, of Laingsburg, Mich., died as a result of non-combat injuries in Camp Babylon, Iraq.
