Randolph's fiance, Roger Harris, said he heard shooting practice often at Speight's home. Harris said the shooting was often in the evening. He nearly went next door to complain a week ago.
"I am glad I didn't," he told ABC News.
They have no idea what may have happened at the house which was listed for sale last year.
Police are not commenting on a motive, but said Speight is cooperating.
School was cancelled early today when the dragnet for Speight was still on. Appomattox County Schools Superintendent Dorinda Grasty told the Associated Press she did not have the list of confirmed victims but expects the school system will be affected.
The flag was at half-staff in front of Appomattox County High School and Grasty said crisis teams will be available when students return Thursday.
