Transcript for Inside the Flood Threat in Manitou Springs, Colorado
So this little stream here doesn't look like much more than a trickle right now but I want to show you just what -- can do when it really rains here in manatee springs. This all happened last year but you can see where the water completely washed away the foundation of this house in fact. You can see this home totally destroyed by mud and debris that came washing downstream. -- all of this water comes out of the banks of retaining walls of this little stream here. It gets pretty high let me show you. This home here. Shows us where the water and the -- level was came all the way up to here last year so. To prevent all of this from happening again there's a new project we want to show you just upstream a multi million dollar effort. To keep these neighborhoods dry and prevent this from happening ever again. So come with us we're gonna show you this project but along the way I want to show you all of the sandbags that people have -- up in front of their homes trying to keep a flood waters from coming right in the front door. One of the problems with this area is that a couple of years ago there was a wildfire just over the hill here. And it stripped away all of the vegetation and trees that hold the soil in the place. -- all that loose dirt when it rains it all comes flowing downhill comes barreling right through these people's neighborhoods and really you can't stop it. But one of the new ways engineers are trying to stop it is with this new flood control channel. This is the old channel I'm walking on now but in many cases it's washed away so here's the new one you can see it's a lot taller it's thicker. And the purpose is to take all of the water the comes. Barreling down this canyon and funnel it into an area that is controlled keeping it out of these neighborhoods they expect to have it done in the next few months. I'm Clayton send -- for ABC news in manatee springs Colorado.
