Transcript for Landscape Designer Kate Orff Shares Her Vision for a Revitalized New York Harbor
Skate was selected by the museum of modern art to participate and -- workshop called rising currents. I started to think about projects for New York's waterfront and trying to come up with the concept for climate change and sea level rise and or -- or -- -- -- is -- -- -- out front a lot of things. But I think -- already happening harper and mr. provides a roadmap for thinking about the future. Coming up next -- and -- history -- oysters New York was once known as the oyster capital of the world. At one point 25% are there was covered with oyster beds they were this amazing kind of animal. That really built up in the New -- economy can talk about the biological power -- eastern -- and why it's such a great candidate for. The water for restoration. Oysters and mussels -- filter -- that means they take water in and in many cases cleaner water comes out so oysters and mussels are great candidates for helping reduce these really heavy -- -- and water systems in the -- -- canal which is currently -- Superfund site because there's you know legacy of industrial contaminants there we have a very small and micro scale pilot project to -- some of the ideas -- -- and that pilot project involves -- -- which is used in the marine aquaculture industry to grow and -- muscles. Our idea was to. Retrofit a working -- -- appear that is receiving shipments and barged materials. And retrofit this working peer. With these habitat structures and senate president -- just basically makes this matrix and -- every kind of surface area it offers something for. -- muscle to take hold that and then we're -- these panels and between that -- -- -- -- This is called the new -- on it yes is this if the Columbus where it could look like I fell and I think this is a vision. That represented -- -- cleaner safer water. And new -- access to water along its edges of the key kind of lesson of oyster -- that we can start now readily available materials that are cheap. And it's just a matter answered cleaner waters and organizing ourselves and that all of this that's happening the future of the waterfront isn't. Just recreation -- just high and apartment buildings but it's this mixture of uses that I think can be really exciting and I think would bring some the next entry.
