Dec. 10, 2010— -- The Federal Aviation Administration has lost track of the ownership information for one-third of the 357,000 private and commercial airplanes in the U.S., The Associated Press reported today.
Fearing terrorists, drug traffickers or other criminals could buy planes or illegally use registration numbers to bypass computer programs that track suspicious planes, the FAA has ordered all aircraft owners to re-register their planes.
The FAA told the AP that about 119,000 planes in the U.S. have "questionable registration." Contributing to the confusion are invalid addresses, unreported sales and missing paperwork.
