Dan Harris Named Anchor 'World News Sunday'

Nov. 15, 2006 — -- Dan Harris has been named anchor of "World News Sunday," ABC News President David Westin announced today. With this new role, Harris will also continue as a New York-based correspondent for ABC News broadcasts and platforms, including "World News with Charles Gibson," "Good Morning America," "Nightline," ABC News Digital and ABC News Radio.

"Dan has covered a wide range of stories overseas and domestically with intelligence, perspective and tenacity," Westin said. "He is a strong storyteller with a talent for finding the unexpected and uncovered angle in whatever he reports. These talents will also distinguish him as anchor and will be an enormous benefit to the program."

Harris joined ABC News in March, 2000. He has covered many of the biggest stories in recent years. He has reported from such diverse datelines as New York's Ground Zero, Pakistan, Afghanistan, South Korea, Israel, Gaza and the West Bank. He has also spent many months in Iraq, both before and after the US-led invasion.

Domestically, Harris covered the presidential campaigns of Howard Dean and John Kerry. He also reported on the immediate aftermath of Hurricane Katrina and the cultural and political impact of Christian Conservatives.

Before he joined ABC News, Harris was an anchor at New England Cable News, the largest regional cable news network in the country, from 1997 to 2000. Before that he was an anchor and political reporter at WCSH, an NBC affiliate in Portland, Maine, for two years. He began his broadcasting career as a reporter for WLBZ, the NBC affiliate in Bangor, Maine.

Harris has been honored several times for his journalistic contributions. His accolades include an Associated Press Award for political coverage, a regional Emmy for feature stories and a an Alfred I. duPont Award for in-depth coverage.

A graduate of Colby College in Waterville, Maine, Harris was raised in Newton, Mass., a suburb of Boston. He currently lives in New York City.
