And we turn next now to the dramatic shootout today here in New York. U.s. Marshals in a showdown with a suspected child molester, the suspect featured on a pop yule lar crime show just days earlier. And tonight, we're learning that the show and its host, John Walsh, may have played a role. ABC's Mara schiavocampo has the story. Reporter: It was a gun battle in broad daylight. Two federal marshals and one new York City police detective shot while attempting to arrest this man, 32-year-old Charles mozdir, wanted for molesting a 7-year-old boy. Fired upon the officers at very close range and the officers returned fire. Reporter: Those shots rang out just after 1:00 this afternoon here in one of the busiest and most popular neighborhoods in New York City. While the officers are expected to recover from their injuries, the suspect was killed. Mozdir had just been featured on CNN's program "The hunt," hosted by John Walsh, formally of "America's most wanted." Authorities saying that broadcast led to hundreds of tips, one of which led them to mozdir. On the run for two years, officers tracked him here, all the way from California where he'd skipped bail. They had to deal with an incredibly difficult situation, split-second decisions. Reporter: It's been a deadly year for officers on the front lines. 71 killed nationwide in 2014. And tonight, another reminder of dangers in the line of duty. Mara schiavocampo, ABC news, new York.
