Transcript for George Clooney Takes on the Press
Actor George Clooney said one of the world's biggest newspapers owed his fiance and her family an apology, and he won. Here's ABC's linsey Davis. Reporter: George Clooney is no stranger to life in the spotlight, promoting movies on the red carpet, and calling attention to humanitarian causes. Today Clooney drew a line in a usa today op-ed, writing that a laughable tabloid had entered into the arena of inciting violence when the daily mail published this article about his fiance, Amal alamuddin. The article claimed that his soon to be mother-in-law not only opposed her engagement on religion grounds but she didn't think Clooney was good enough for her. The gravity star slammed the daily mail for publishing the story Clooney says on top of being completely fabricated put his family and friends in harm's way. Clooney writes, the irresponsibility in this day and age to exploit religious differences where none exists is at the very least negligent and more appropriately dangerous. Today a very rare apology. In an e-mail to ABC news, a mail online spokesman said the story, now removed was supplied in good faith by a reputable journalist. However, we accept Mr. Clooney assurance that the story is inaccurate and we apologize. While they plan to reach out to Clooney to set the record straight, Clooney, it seems, has already done that. Linsey Davis, ABC news, new York.
