The discount website livingsocial, is telling its users to change its passwords and is apologizing after that site was hacked. With so many passwords, so many of us try to keep them simple so we remember them. As linzie janis tells us, that's exactly what the hackers want. Reporter: It's the site where deal-hunters go for discounts on everything from rounds of golf to spa treatments. But this weekend, more than 50 million members of livingsocial are learning they have been hacked. Their names, e-mail addresses, birthdays, and encrypted versions of their passwords may have been compromised. John tests online security for businesses by seeing how easy it is for him to hack in. It's a very attractive target. Now that they have all of these PASSWORDS AND I.D.s, THEY CAN Try and use them on all the other sites where they are really valuable. Reporter: That's why livingsocial is requiring users to change their passwords. And if they use the same one on another site, like online banking, it says better change that, too. It's so important to use different passwords on each site that you log into. That way if one of them is compromised, you aren't compromised across the entire internet. Reporter: We can also help ourselves by making our passwords more difficult for hackers to decode. Going from six characters to seven characters could mean the difference between going from days to years to crack them. Especially if you throw in some special characters, like an asterisk or a period. Reporter: Now, another thing we shouldn't do is write down all of our passwords on a piece of paper.
