Will the new standards create a spike of 9, 10 cents in the price of a gallon of gasoline? Here's abc's senior national correspondent jim avila. Reporter: The american oil industry, ofits of more than $300 billion over the last five years, says big oil and the nation's drivers cannot afford to pay even a penny more to further reduce the amount of air polluting sulfur in gasoline. You you can't afford 1 to 10 cents a gallon? We do earn profits, and those profits go to out shareholders, which are tens of millions of americans. Reporter: The epa proposing today nationwide standards for gasoline cutting sulfurs by two-thirds and smog-causing tail pipe emissions by 80%. We're going to be looking at significant health benefits. We're going to be looking at more than 2,000 premature deaths avoided. Reporter: Clean air advocates say the new proposal, in effect by 2017, would be equal to taking 33 million cars off american roads. Jim avila, abc news, washington.
