One of the hottest scams of the summer almost a quarter of Americans say they've stayed in vacation homes that they rent from the owners but what happens when the owner has no idea. ABC's Rebecca Jarvis tonight. Retired couple John and Nancy donor -- to travel and were planning the triple -- lifetime to New York City this fall we're -- travel farther away. While we're younger -- -- Like so many they turned to a vacation rental site an explosively popular way to find it locks accommodations without the price tag of a hotel. Seems like a great deal so we accepted wired -- cash even got to thank you email with the rental agreement. But then the web site disappeared and then begin say well -- what's going on here. What the company's address listed on -- rental agreement we -- -- down in London. But no business there. Just this innocent guys home from hormone and as far as -- go this is an epidemic here's one weighty -- -- -- home for -- online and reach out to the -- But -- scammer is waiting to intercept your message and sends you an offer without the real owners -- -- knowing. We -- the apartment from John and Nancy scam artist to only -- Wednesday no right inside this New York City apartment building. The owner declined to speak to us on camera but told us people have literally showing up on their doorstep not realizing they've been -- Two of the biggest rental company's home away which owns BR BO and -- key. Told us that this happens to far less than 1% of their customers. That traveler should avoid communicating with anyone outside of their sites and -- never wire money use a credit card or PayPal instead. Rebecca Jarvis ABC news New York.
