June 5, 2013 -- If you've been listening to popular music in the last year, your listening pleasure has been interrupted within the first 10 seconds of a song with an auto-tuned voice letting you know who is behind the song you are trying to listen to… Mike WiLL.
So who is this Mike WiLL of the now-famous "Mike WiLL Made It" song intros? He's a 24-year-old Atlantan who's producing everything you hear on the radio, including Miley Cyrus' first single "We Can't Stop" from her forthcoming album.
Somehow, this 24-year-old managed to make the right connections at the absolute right time because he's been working with the most relevant hip-hop artists at the start of their careers, along with the most established ones (like Rihanna) at their peaks.
Mike WiLL was playing basketball before he started making beats, and once he realized he was good he went all in. The first big artist to use his beats was Gucci Mane, who he met in Atlanta when he was 16-years-old. Together they released "East Atlanta 6" and a few tracks from Gucci's popular mix tape No Pad, No Pencil.
He worked with Rick Ross and Meek Mill on "Tupac Back", which was a huge success and his first real single. But before working with the bigger names he produced some songs for Atlanta rapper Future (who's everywhere now -- including Ciara's new video for a song that was also produced by Mike WiLL). He also worked with 2 Chainz back when 2 Chainz was just Tity Boi (great name). Together they released "No Lie" featuring Drake, which was a huge success for the rapper. It peaked at #1 on Billboard's Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart.
Mike WiLL's next big hit was "Bandz A Make Her Dance" by Juicy J, Lil Wayne, and 2 Chainz -- sparking the "strip club music" genre, which Mike WiLL hates. He also produced Rihanna's "Pour It Up" -- which was also considered strip club music.
Apart from those hits, Mike WiLL released three mixtapes of his own over the last two years -- Est. In 1989 (Last Of A Dying Breed), Est. In 1989 Pt. 2, and Est. In 1989 2.5 -- where he collaborated with Diddy, Mac Miller, Waka Flocka Flame, and most of the artists he had already worked with. He's releasing a fourth Est. In 1989 installment but this time it'll be his first studio album. In fact, it's called Est. In 1989 Pt. 3 (The Album) in case you didn't know.
His most recent work?
He brought Ciara back (for like the third time in her career) this year with her new single "Body Party" (she looks incredible in the video FYI), and Kelly Rowland's very sexy-titled song "Kisses Down Low." He's producing Britney Spears' new song "Outta Control" and Miley Cyrus' just-released single "We Can't Stop." The song has been out for only a couple of day but within the first 10 hours it topped iTunes singles charts in 18+ countries.
Her album doesn't come out until Fall though, and some people are confused by the push to release the song at this time. It's not a great song, but if Mike WiLL and Miley Cyrus are behind it you know it's going to play on every radio station for the entire summer.
So keep your radios off. Or on. Depends if you like "dancing with Molly"... or is she saying "dancing with Miley"? And there will be plenty of "Mike WiLL Made It" for the foreseeable future.
