Two major 'Boston Globe' unions agree to cuts

BOSTON -- Unions that represent mailers and printers at The Boston Globe have agreed to concessions they hope will keep the 137-year-old newspaper publishing.

Unions that represent editorial staff and drivers vote on concessions next month.

The Boston Mailers Union, Teamsters Local 1, said its members voted 107-95 Tuesday to approve $5 million in cuts. President Mary White says she was surprised at the closeness of the vote.

The Boston Printing Pressman's Union, Teamsters Local 3, says its members accepted $2.2 million in concessions but President Martin Callaghan did not reveal the vote totals.

The newspaper's parent company, The New York Times Co., has threatened to shut down the Globe unless unions agree to $20 million in cuts.
