— -- Hello, Ms. Gladys, I have looked everywhere for a step-by-step guide to starting and running a business. So far I have found nothing. It becomes frustrating trying to read through tons of books on starting a business. Can you tell me where I might find a book that will lead to a successful business from start to finish? M. Y.

I wish I could say that such a book exists, but if it does I have not seen it. And there is a good reason for that. Each of us desires to put our own unique spin on starting and running a business. Great stories are made around creative individuals getting started and running a business.

However, I agree that you need some sort of road map to guide you in business and you should be the creator of it. You can do this in the form of a business plan or use a notebook to keep notes in that act as a blueprint. However you decide to create your plan it should address the following business elements:

Description of the business. What kind of business are you starting?

Marketing plan. This is one of the most important areas of business. When you prepare your marketing plan make certain that you start by identifying who will buy what you're selling and why.

Operating procedures. Make a point to develop an operating manual so that employees know how you want invoices written, filing done, tasks that need to be done and when. This will save you a lot of time later.

What employees you need and what jobs your expect them to perform

Financial issues. Call an accountant to help you set up an accounting system and to assist you in selecting accounting software.

Legal concerns. Consult with a legal advisor to determine what licenses you will need and/or legal documents.

Equipment and supplies. Will you buy them new, used or rentals?

Inventory management. Who will do it, what will it entail?

Location. Are you going to lease an office, or clear space at home for a home-based business?
