Columbus Short Arrest Result of a Bail Dispute, Lawyer Says

— -- Former "Scandal" star Columbus Short is on his way out of a Los Angeles jail after being arrested by bounty hunters during his album release party.

"Essentially, it was a business dispute between him and his bail bondsman," Short's attorney Ludlow B. Creary told ABC News today. "His bail bondsman yanked his bail and sent bounty hunters out. They are not law enforcement. It was a citizen arrest."

Creary added, "The court knew nothing about this. It was not initiated by court. There was no bench warrant. This was not a law enforcement action. It was over a business misunderstanding."

Prior to this latest arrest, Short, 32, was out on a $250,000 bond for a felony battery charge stemming from a March 2014 brawl in the parking lot of a Los Angeles bar. In December 2014, a judge ruled that the actor would have to stand trial. If convicted, he faces up to four years in prison. He pleaded not guilty.

With the case pending, Creary said Short has been "focused on getting back to work."

He called Tuesday night's arrest "unfortunate," because it occurred just as Short was about to go on stage at Universal Studios City Walk in Los Angeles to perform his new music.

"It's unfortunate that they [the bail bondsman] chose this particular forum to deal with a business dispute," the actor's lawyer said. "It had to do with their financial arrangement."

Short spent all of Wednesday in the Men's Central Jail in Los Angeles, before posting bond with another agency that night.

He was expected to be released today and is due back in court Sept. 11.

"I have not been perfect, but I have not been all the things that have been in the press," Short told "Access Hollywood" in July.

Short announced in April 2014 that he would be leaving "Scandal" after three seasons, giving no explanation.
