After seeing his dad struggle with alcohol, Robertson made the decision to wait until he was 30 to have a drink.
"I've never been high or drunk in my life. As much as I would like to say it was a spiritual decision, it was really a decision I made from monitoring my dad when he rented the bar and the things that happened and it made me uncomfortable and I thought, ‘Whatever they’re doing, I’m just not going to do that,'" he told Fox. "I made a decision to wait before I drank any alcohol till I was around 30 because I just thought, 'I want to be mature enough to exert self-control.' Now I’ll have an occasional drink. It’s not something that I’m into and I just don’t have a problem."

Robertson, 44, also said that he waited until he was married, at age 20, to have sex with his longtime love, Missy. That, he said, "was the hardest thing I've ever had to do in my entire life," adding that some girls broke up with him when he told them that sex was off the table. Others, including Missy, saw it "as a sign of strength."
"My wife in particular, she really loved the idea that she felt secure with me, like I had a direction I was taking. I didn’t sugarcoat anything," he said. "I said, ‘I’m a hunter, I’m a fisherman, I’m gone weeks at a time. I’m just laying this out. But I will take care of you and I will treat you with respect and I want to wait till I get married,’ and I would share my faith with them. Missy was the first girl that loved that. She was like, ‘OK, this is awesome!'"
