— -- The news that Jeff Fordham plunged to his death shook the foundations of Nashville in last night’s episode, as Juliette Barnes struggled to comprehend exactly what happened on that fateful rooftop.

His girlfriend Layla Grant reached out to Rayna Jaymes after she was shut out by his family.

Meanwhile, Rayna struggled with Deacon Claybourne’s decision to run a bar in his late sister’s honor, given his problems with alcohol. As Juliette fought her own battle with booze, she blurted out to the media that Jeff committed suicide.

Her soon-to-be-ex-husband Avery Barclay and Will Lexington found comfort in the couple’s baby Cadence and the fact that they’re both nursing a heartbreak. Meanwhile, their other roommate Gunnar Scott tempted fate by hiring his new love interest to work on his tour with Scarlett O’Connor, who just impulsively cut her long blonde locks into a short bob.

In spite of her initial protests, Luke Wheeler managed to wear down his business associate Gabriella Manning, and the two became romantically involved. Even though his son Colt knew exactly what happened on the roof between Juliette and Jeff, Luke refused to believe him because the teen had been drinking.

As Juliette emerged from her cloud of drugs and booze, she remembered she’d climbed to the top of that building in her drunken stupor to kill herself, but Jeff intervened, losing both his balance and his life in the process of saving the troubled star. Juliette confessed this to Luke, and agreed to go to rehab.

The drama of "Nashville" returns next Wednesday night at 10 p.m. ET on ABC.
