— -- Robert and Cortney Novogratz, of the series "9 By Design," became famous for raising their seven children in a home they stylishly decorated in New York City.

However, the design team couple and their brood have left the Big Apple to embark on a new adventure: renovating a castle in the Hollywood Hills for a new web series, "The Castle Next Door -- The Novogratz Family Takes Hollywood," streaming now on People.com.

Ultimately, the cross-country move has brought the family even closer, the patriarch told ABC News.

"We have our own tribe. It was us against the world, so we all stuck together," he said, adding that the move was meant to take the kids out of their comfort zones. "We were doing a lot of design work in California and we felt like, 'Let's mix it up for a few years and see how the other side of the country lives.' It's how we do everything: walking the fine line of bravery and stupidity."

For several months, the family renovated their new castle, tearing down walls and opening up the space. This past winter, they were finally able to move into the four-bedroom home.

"We wanted something unique, with a yard for the kids. [Also], we have amazing views," he explained. "We can walk to Starbucks and we have four or five places we love [nearby], and as a New Yorker, that’s the best thing in the world."

While the full renovation will be revealed on their new series, which was produced by Madica Productions and People Productions, here is a sneak peek of what to expect from the former HGTV stars' new home:

Staircase

Originally, the castle had floors made of several different types of wood, but the Novogratzes wanted to create a more consistent look. Though they kept the original metal banisters on the staircase, they replaced the treads with the same reclaimed wood from Germany that they used throughout the rest of the home. "We loved the look of the stairs but we wanted to make it a little more modern," he said. "The most expensive thing we did was the flooring!"

Den

The castle came with "an old, ugly fireplace," which the Novogratzes replaced with a clean, cement unit. "There are five [throughout the castle] with the same look," he revealed. "We wanted the house to have a uniformity to it." They also punched up the walls by adding colorful art that "doesn't take itself too seriously," and made sure to invest in comfortable furniture. "Comfort is most important with kids and without!" he said.

Dining Room

To create a space reminiscent of a New York City loft, the Novogratzes demolished several walls throughout the castle. The key to the castle, so to speak, was making sure the rooms had a grand feel, he said, and also highlighting the beautiful views: "We have doors in the dining room that go out to a balcony which was not an easy thing to add but we did it!" he said.

Bedroom

Though the Novogratzes are known for their bold color choices, they went with a more muted palette for bedroom to create a "French chateau vibe," he said. They also created higher ceilings, which allowed them to have more fun with light fixtures. "We design a lot of boutique hotels and we felt like we wanted this house to have that feel," he said.

Bathroom

In keeping with the boutique hotel look, the Novogratzes added new tile to the bathroom and a sleek-looking shower next to an updated tub. "We always have a mix of modern and vintage," he said.
