March 26, 2014 — -- It's been about a month since Robin Thicke and Paula Patton announced their separation after being married since 2005.

Following the split, Thicke, 37, began a concert in Virginia with a tribute to Patton, his wife and mother of their 3-year-old son Julian.

"For those of you who don't know, my wife and I got separated a few days ago," Thicke said back in February. "But you know, I want everybody here to know that I'm trying to get my girl back."

The 37-year-old "Blurred Lines" singer explained that public display to People magazine last night, saying Patton "loved it. She thought it was the sweetest thing and very romantic, and I've always been a romantic guy that way."

"My music is very honest about what I'm going through and my songs are about my life. And my relationship with her was 21 years of my life, so I just thought it was important to me to let people know how much she means to me," he added.

Thicke said he and Patton are "both very happy right now -- much happier."

Thicke also told the magazine his goals for 2014 are "to be a great father and hopefully write some great music, put on some great shows and be a great friend to Paula."
