Nov. 1, 2000 -- Paul Harvey, known as the most listened to man in radio, marked his 50th year with ABC Radio Networks by announcing a new 10-year deal with the network.

More than 18 million listeners tune into Harveys quirky commentary on current events and daily reports each week, and he can be heard on five of the top 10 syndicated programs, according to the RADAR 66 results published by Statistical Research Inc.

Ive found a wonderful home here at ABC Radio, and I look forward to continuing to build relationships with loyal listeners. Harvey said. Were in the midst of one of the most exciting periods in American history, and I look forward to covering the stories and trends of the next decade.

Wife, Son Will Work on Show

Harveys wife and the producer of Paul Harvey News, Lynne Angel Harvey, also signed a new contract. And his son, Paul Harvey Jr., who won the 2000 Edward R. Murrow Award for best writing, will continue to write The Rest of the Story.

Paul Harvey is, without question, one of the most influential Americans of our time, said Traug Keller, president of ABC Radio Networks. In fact, political adviser and communications specialist Frank Mankiewicz noted that Paul Harveys name appears most often in lists of the 10 most influential opinion-shapers of each decade since the 1930s.

Harvey, a Peabody Award-winning newsman, began broadcasting on the ABC Radio Networks in 1951 with Paul Harvey News and Comment. In 1976 he launched The Rest of the Story, featuring human interest stories with surprise endings.

Currently, Harvey can be heard on approximately 1,200 radio stations, as well as 400 Armed Forces Network stations heard around the world.
