April 15, 2014 — -- With only a few weeks left in season 1, it's not too late to start watching "Marvel, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." In fact, you can start at anytime, all you need is this quick sheet that will illuminate you on what is essential to know.

After that, grab some popcorn and soda, sit back and enjoy the show tonight at 8 p.m. EST on ABC.

1 - S.H.I.E.L.D. stands for Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement, and Logistics Division

The agents don’t have super powers, but they live in a universe where some do (think Thor and Captain America). The agents make up a powerful organization tasked with saving the world from threatening, supernatural events, but their lack of super powers makes them the underdogs.

2 - You don’t need to have seen all of the Marvel movies to get “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.”

The series works in tandem with other Marvel films, both past and upcoming. The S.H.I.E.L.D. agents operate adjacent to other Marvel agents. The casts overlap at points, but S.H.I.E.L.D. is mostly made up of new characters.

3 - The Main Players

Agent Phil Coulson leads the team (check out his story below). Melinda May is pretty much his number two – a pilot who specializes in weapons. Grant Ward is kick-ass specialist (not to mention smoking hot) who was sleeping with May. But Ward seems to have a thing for Skye. She’s a hacker whose birth parents had a link to S.H.I.E.L.D. and she was brought on board when they learned of her computer skills. Leo Fitz and Jemma Simmons are the medical and technical brains behind it all.

4 - Agent Phil Coulson Died -- But Was Brought Back to Life

If you saw “The Avengers,” Agent Coulson appeared to have died. Long story short, Coulson was basically brainwashed into thinking he was in Tahiti when he was actually getting saved by some super powerful medicine. That same medicine was also used to save Skye when she was shot in the abdomen.

5 - HYDRA is Really, Really Bad

HYDRA’s the fictional terrorist organization the S.H.I.E.L.D. agents are up against. Their missions to spread death and destruction, and they are trying to take over and eliminate S.H.I.E.L.D. The big question right now is who is HYDRA and who is S.H.I.E.L.D.
