June 22, 2009 — -- As the White House and Congress focus on health care reform, first lady Michelle Obama said she hopes her involvement in promoting healthy living will encourage members of the next generation to embrace preventive measures when it comes to their own health.

Acknowledging the obstacles the Obama administration faces in passing health care reform, the first lady told "Good Morning America's" Robin Roberts in an exclusive interview airing Wednesday that her role is to encourage "prevention and wellness and exercise."

The first lady talked with Roberts in the grandchildren's garden on the White House South Lawn. The stepping stones into the garden have handprints of former presidents' grandchildren, beginning with Lyndon Johnson. Young people have become the first lady's focus.

By "ringing the bell" for nutrition and fitness, "if that changes somebody's life or it sets a new tone for the next generation, I think that can be helpful," she said.
