Sept. 8, 2007 — -- Early this morning, after hours of police questioning, missing Madeleine McCann's father Gerry was named as a suspect in her disappearance.

Now, 128 days since the night she vanished, both of Madeleine's parents are the focus of the police investigation.

The couple, along with their family, continues to defend their innocence.

"They are emotionally incapable of doing it," Gerry's brother John McCann told "Good Morning America Weekend Edition," adding that both parents are "professionals, they're doctors, they would never do this."

During 11 hours of questioning, according to family sources, Kate McCann was offered a deal: Confess to accidentally killing her daughter and disposing of the body days later, and get just two years in jail. She said no.

"I think that the police assertions that they may have drugged the children, so they could go out and the children could sleep and be left and not to disturb them, is completely and utterly outrageous and completely wrong," said John O'Connor, a retired Scotland Yard detective.

The McCann's have made themselves global figures during an intense and far-reaching media campaign.

"We've been sitting on pins and needles wondering if she was abducted by a pedophile and raped and murdered and that was awful," criminal profiler Pat Brown said. "Now, of course, the parents are suspects and that's equally as horrifying."

But, despite the stress it has presented, it's a turn of events that even the family seems to be taking in stride.

"Police were stuck; they needed to investigate all options," said John McCann, who continues to maintain his brother's innocence.

Portuguese police are basing their accusation on results of forensic tests carried out on samples taken from the McCann's apartment and a rental car.

"They have suggested that blood has been found in a hire car that they hired 25 days after Madeleine was taken," said Justine McGuinness, the McCann family spokesperson.

While the McCann's have been identified as primary suspects, they have not been formally charged or arrested. They are adamant that they have done nothing wrong.
