—Jan. 13, 2010 -- Question: Do I need to regularly detoxify, or cleanse my colon to eliminate toxins from my body?

Answer:You know in a perfect world I would have to say that detoxification would not necessarily be something we have to do, but the reality is that we have many things in our environment that are challenging for our bodies to fight and keep up our resilience. I would consider a sensible detoxification, eating healthily, meaning eating no foods that have additives, eating foods that are fresh and vital. Some people really go to extremes to detoxify. For instance, they feel compelled to do colon cleansing. Professionally, I am of the opinion that this is not necessarily a safe practice and there's not a consistent standardizations where these things happen. I feel that in the wrong situation, not great things can happen to that individual.

On the other hand, we've seen many articles suggesting that liquid fasts for short periods of time in patients, say, with rheumatoid arthritis or inflammatory bowel disease can actually gain benefit. With the proviso that they're getting enough calories and enough hydration, I generally suggest if you're going to do a fast that it be somewhat short, meaning one or two days in length.
