— -- Question: What are the signs that I should call my doctor on an urgent basis if I have gestational diabetes, and should I be induced for early delivery if I have gestational diabetes?

Answer: Gestational diabetes is different from the diabetes we've been talking about. Gestational diabetes is diabetes that first appears during pregnancy. For the vast majority of women, this will be in the third trimester, usually after 28 or 30 weeks of pregnancy.

For women with gestational diabetes, we'll do what we can to control their blood sugar either with diet or with insulin. And in terms of delivery, that really depends on the woman's specific situation and her obstetrician's pattern of practice. It does vary substantially from place to place and across the country, and I'm not going to give you a specific week that you need to deliver your baby by; that's something you should discuss with your obstetrician.
