Aug. 24, 2009— -- Question: Are there any lifestyle changes I can make to help with my dry eye?

Answer: There are a number of things that we can do in our lifestyle changes to help with our dry eye. If you know you're going to be on a long airplane trip, take your drops with you. It's very dry on airplanes. If you're going skiing -- high altitudes, low humidity -- another case where you need your drops with you.

At home or at work, if the air conditioning or heating vent is blowing near your eyes, turn your chair so it's not coming across your face. And another real big one is working at the computer. We spend lots of time there these days. Often people are concentrating so hard on the computer that their blink rate slows down. If you can think about it, blink a little bit more, that's a real help. Hard to do but certainly we can take breaks from staring at the monitor for long hours.

And even positioning that monitor -- not to have it ahead of you or above eye level -- but at eye level or below is even better. That narrows the aperture of the lids and protects the eye from evaporating. These all can make a big difference.
