March 16, 2009 -- Question: Does eating charred meats affect the risk of developing prostate cancer?

Answer: The concern with charred meats is that, in the charring process, there may be chemicals that are released that can increase the risk for prostate cancer. This association has not been definitively confirmed. At this point in time, our general guidelines are to decrease animal fats in the diet and to increase consumption of fish. This is an overall heart-healthy diet and may also improve prostate health.
