April 1, 2001— -- Queen Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh visited RAF Valley Friday, meeting with their grandson, Prince William, at his base in Anglesey.

The queen, wearing a red coat and matching hat, was met by strong gusty winds as she arrived in North Wales, which almost blew the hat off her head.

The trip marks Prince William's sixth month as a royal air force search and rescue pilot. The prince gave his grandparents a tour of a Sea King helicopter, sharing stories of his past rescues.

Prince William told the BBC that his job was demanding but rewarding.

"Every day you come into work you don't quite know what's going to happen. It's quite exciting in that sense, it's unpredictable," he said. "But at the same time it's great that you get to go out and actually save someone's life, hopefully, or at least make a difference to somebody. When you know that they are in trouble, you do everything you can to get there."

Prince William is about to embark on another nerve-wracking situation: marriage. With the nuptials less than one month away, the prince admitted to the BBC he was feeling a bit jittery.

"I did the rehearsals the other day, and my knees started going, tapping quite nervously," he said. "So it's quite a daunting prospect but very exciting, and I'm thoroughly looking forward to it."

After the big day, William and Kate will settle down in Anglesey, living in the North Wales town for the first two years of their married lives as William continues his RAF post.

"The beach is here and the general life is great to settle in and knuckle down to a proper job. We are left alone, it's good," Prince William said.
