Watch Prince William and Kate Middleton's Royal Walkabout
Feb. 24, 2011— -- Today is Day 1 in Kate Middleton's new royal life. The princess-to-be has begun her new role as a public figure, joining Prince William for her first public appearance since they announced their engagement.
Upwards of 4,000 people gathered in Anglesey, a remote island in Wales, to see and support the royal couple.
Kate was dressed in a velvet-collared coat and a fascinator, a hat that held back her hair from the gusts of wind, which are quite common in Anglesey.
On the day's agenda, Prince William and Kate Middleton delivered a speech, only the second time Kate has been heard speaking in public. The future king and queen also named a lifeboat and poured champagne over its bow.
Anglesey is familiar territory for William and Kate: The couple live there part-time as William serves as a search-and-rescue helicopter pilot, and will continue to do so for the first two years of their married lives.
Perhaps this is why William has chosen this place to bring Kate fully into the royal spotlight.
