Captured Mexican drug lord Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman was transferred early this morning to the Ciudad Juarez jail in northern Mexico near the Texas border, according to Julio Herrera, Communications Director for Mexico's Attorney General.

Guzman -- who was captured in January after six months on the run -- was transferred to the northern Mexico prison from the maximum-security Altiplano prison near Mexico City.

The National Security Commission said the transfer "was done due to different works that are being done in the Cefereso Number 1 prison (Altiplano) to reinforce the security of the prison."

The United States' extradition request for Guzman was initiated just after his capture.
