6 Years For 'Missing' Canoeist and Wife

Anne and John Darwin were senteneced to over 6 years for fraud.

LONDON, July 23, 2008— -- A husband and wife who faked the man's drowning death in a250,000 pound (US$500,000) insurance scam were each sentenced Wednesday tomore than six years in jail.

A judge sentenced Anne Darwin, 56, to six and a half years. She was foundguilty earlier in the day of six counts of fraud and nine counts of moneylaundering. Her husband John Darwin, 57, who had pleaded guilty, received sixyears and three months.

The couple staged John Darwin's death in an apparent canoe accident in2002 to collect pension and insurance payments. The plot began to unravel inDecember when John Darwin walked into a London police station claiming tohave amnesia.
