— -- On July 9, U.S. forces killed a top terrorist inside Afghanistan linked to the Pakistani Taliban, the Pentagon announced today.

Umar Khalifa, a member of the Tariq Gidar Group, was the mastermind behind the horrific attack on a Peshawar school in December 2014 that killed more than 130 students, many of them children of Pakistani military officials. It was the deadliest attack to ever occur in Pakistan.

The Pentagon said in a statement that Khalifa was killed along with four other enemy combatants in an airstrike targeting Islamic State militants.

According to the Pentagon, Khalifa orchestrated multiple terrorist operations in Pakistan, including the January 2016 attack on Bacha Khan University, the September 2015 Badaber Air Force Base attack, and the aforementioned December 2014 Peshawar school attack.
