— -- An Alabama high school student and her 80-year-old grandfather both attended their first prom together Saturday, and they went together.

“She said, 'Hey, will you come to the prom with me and be my beau?’” James Drain told news station WHNT of his granddaughter, Joy Webb. “I said, ‘I sure will.’”

Joy, a student at Albertville High School in Albertville, Alabama, traveled to Saturday night’s prom with her grandfather in a horse-driven carriage.

“My family is everything to me, and I love him so much, and it’s just like really special to me because I know not many people get to do that,” Joy told WHNT. “And I know he loves me and I love him, and it’s just really, really neat and special.”

Drain, whom Joy calls “Poppa,” said he brought his name up to his granddaughter and she quickly agreed.

“She said, ‘Poppa, oh, Poppa,’” Drain recalled his granddaughter replying. “You’re the one I wanted to start with. I would love that. You’re the one I wanted.”

Drain had not only never attended his own prom while in high school, he had also never worn a tuxedo before Saturday night.

“This is my first appearance in a tuxedo. First tuxedo I’ve ever had,” Drain said.

Joy called her grandfather her “prince.”

“And this is my prince for the night,” she said.
