Falling in Love in FAO Schwarz: Employees' Big Piano Proposal Goes Viral After 'Magical' Store Closes

— -- It was true love in New York City’s most iconic toy store.
These former FAO Schwarz employees’ engagement video on the famous Big Piano has gone viral after the “magical” store closed its doors on Wednesday.
“I started working there as a toy demonstrator and my wife Tina worked there as well,” Jason Ferrara, of Brooklyn, N.Y., told ABC News of how they met. “The nature of the store is really magical. After some time, I had asked her out and we were dating and every day I got to see her interacting with children and after a while it was just like, ‘I have to marry her.'"
FAO Schwarz was the foundation for their entire relationship, so Ferrara only found it fitting that he incorporate the Big Piano into his surprise proposal on March 31, 2007.
“I tricked her and said my aunt is coming into town and wanted to see how we dance on the piano,” he explained of the elaborate proposal. “I showed up and made sure that people kept her distracted and I staged my family and her family from Baltimore and various parts of New Jersey in the crowd behind some aisles. I called her and said, ‘Hey, I’m upstairs with my aunt and she’s got the camcorder ready.’”
That's when the magic ensued. After playing a rousing rendition of “Heart and Sole” just like Tom Hanks in the movie “Big,” Ferrara bent down on his knee to pop the question. Tina was completely shocked and confused, thinking it was instead an early birthday surprise.
"It was a week before my birthday so I had no clue,” Tina, who was the store’s party and even planner, explained. “Ironically I had just finished a bridal shower so I thought that was kind of funny. I just lost it. I knew something was going on but I was in complete shock.”
It wasn’t until their good friend and fellow coworker, the toy soldier, came over and reached his hand into his pocket that she realized what was happening.
Needless to say, she said “yes” and the two are now living happily ever after in Brooklyn with their 2-year-old son, Max.
“It’s like something out of a wacky romantic comedy,” Ferrara said of their fairytale FAO Schwarz-filled relationship. “I am very, very happily married.”
Although both of them have moved on from their toy store days -- Ferrara is now a graphic designer for HBO and Tina is a full-time mom-- they still appreciate where their love first began and have also instilled their love for FAO into their young son.
“We have pictures of my wife pregnant on the Big Piano,” said Ferrara. “We brought him back when he was 1, and my wife brought my son back yesterday to say goodbye and just get some final memories.”
Ferrara says he decided to share the video of their enchanting engagement online again to give people some lighthearted memories to remember the store by, rather than focusing on the sad news of its closure.
“I just thought, you know, this is happiest moment of my life and I wanted to share that with people,” he said. “Even going back recently, there’s people that still work at that store that we remember who saw our entire relationship grow up. It’s hard to ignore that foundation.”
