Forget the Convertible, Check Out Barbie's Hoverboard
Barbie trades in her hot-pink wheels for a self-balancing scooter board.
— -- Barbie’s had a busy year. From appearing on the cover of Time magazine to reinventing her body, our favorite childhood doll now has something else to add to her resume: Hoverboard Barbie.
Available this fall for $59.99, “Barbie Star Light Adventure RC Hoverboarder” features the blond-haired doll clad in a pink, futuristic costume and balancing precariously between four propellers, which actually lift and fly Barbie into the air. For the younger, less experienced users (the doll is advertised for ages 8-plus), a quick push of a controller button launches or lands Barbie quickly and smoothly, while three pre-set “flying stunts” are also located on the controller, easily within reach of your child’s opposable thumbs.
For all intents and purposes, though, it’s a drone marketed to young girls in an industry dominated by male tastes. Barbie’s manufacturer, Mattel Inc., didn’t stop there, though.
For the younger fans, Barbie also has a non-propeller hoverboard option, where users can “move the doll around in a hoverboarding motion to activate various lights and sounds.” This Barbie, however, prefers a purple costume and costs $24.99
And if that doesn’t strike your fancy, Barbie also has a “hovering cat,” which actually flies … sort of. Mattel says the cat has a leash that attaches to Barbie's hand, and with the push of a button, kitty is flying! It’s also available in the fall, for $24.99.
