Pancake Artist Nathan Shields Creates 'GMA' Pancake Portraits

— -- A nine-month stretch as a stay-at-home dad turned Nathan Shields into a pancake artist.

Shields was living with his family in the U.S. commonwealth of Saipan, an island in the western Pacific Ocean, in 2012 when he began making different shapes and designs with his kids' breakfast food.

"About four years ago it started just to have fun exploring art with my kids," Shields said today on "Good Morning America."

Shields, a former math teacher and illustrator, now lives with his family in Washington state but his pancake creativity has continued. He posts his pancake creations at Saipancakes.com, and is also available to fulfill personalized pancake orders.

"The kids are having fun so I’m happy," said Shields.

Shields used his tools -- a frying pan and pancake batter in a squeeze bottle -- to create pancake portraits of the "GMA" family. Watch the video above to see how they turned out.
